Days 103 - 115: Veteran's Day, Vet visit, and Skiing!

It has been a while since we have had an update. It gets tough to find content when the Roaming Blackshire's aren't exactly roaming. Since we last updated, the three of us went roller skating (Wednesday), and Alanna and I went to a Veteran's Day parade in Loveland. It was awesome with firetrucks, marching bands, candy, motorcycles, and horses. It was really great to see all the veterans, and to honor them. Last weekend we went to a fundraiser for Dana's Roller Derby team at a BBQ place, which was good. Then Alanna slept over Dana's (duh), they went to Junior Derby practice, and then Dana had a bout that night in Denver. Brandon met them at the bout as well. I was going to go, but I woke up with a weird, irritated eye and stayed home with Bruce (who also had an irritated eye). My eye cleared up within 48 hours. Bruce's eye didn't clear up quickly like mine. We ended up taking him to the vet and got an antibiotic ointment for it. They eye is looking better, less light sensitive and irritated, but we think he may be completely blind in that eye. Other than that, he is back to his spunky self.

We finally sold our RV couch that weekend and got a new one! The three of found a set that we all agreed on, that worked with our space, and is super comfortable. In between going to furniture places, we found a super cute coffee shop Alley Cat Cafe. It was very busy, the drinks were delicious, and their food was really good, too! Their avocado toast was on freshly made focaccia bread, and so where the sandwiches. Talk about yummy! Socks also got a new piece of furniture, a cat tree! He needs it to get ot his favorite place in the house, Alanna's bed!

Wednesday Dana and I went on a sister date. We sat at the bar, laughed a lot, had some adult beverages, and shared some delicious food. It was a great time that fed my soul and belly. While Dana and I were out, Brandon and Alanna went on a father-daughter date. They also had a bunch of giggles.

We went skiing! Friday, we got up early, picked up Dana, and headed to Winter Park. We got snow the night before, nothing like Buffalo but Colorado also doesn't do a great job with the clean-up/upkeep when it snows. Those of you that don't know, and I'm not sure if we have mentioned it before, Colorado doesn't use salt on their roads and evidently, they don't have a great fleet of plows. The roads were definitely worse on Thursday during the snow, but Friday on our way out we hit a few rough patches, especially on the switch backs going up the mountain. Before the awesome treck up the mountain we stopped in Idaho Springs for some lattes and breakfast. The ride to Winter Park was beautiful. The trees were dusted so beautifully with snow that it actually looked like a black and white picture.

I'm sure you can guess that we were all super excited to ski and had a really great time. The conditions weren't the best, but we were out skiing before Thanksgiving! I believe we made our father proud because not only did we have a great time skiing, but we brought our own growler with us (a Buffalo tradition held by Dad and Uncle Joey at BSC). Our Apres Ski consisted of dancing in the parking lot while we ate sandwich wraps, chips, and fed the crows in hopes of them brining us trinkets. Spoiler alert, we didn't get trinkets. Evidently that takes a long time to create that relationship, and we were there for 15 minutes. Maybe they will find us.

Saturday, we brought Alanna to Boulder for derby practice, then we had to bring her snowboard to get new bindings because they broke the day before on the last run. We ended up getting bindings from Burton in downtown Boulder, going for ramen, then walking around downtown for a bit. Sunday, we skied again! We went to Eldora, which is a bit closer. Again, not the greatest conditions, but a really good time. The three of us laughed, ate pizza, laughed some more. It was like spring skiing; I didn't wear my jacket and rocked a hoodie. Another really good day, and really happy times!

Today, Monday, we were supposed to be expecting our first holiday visitors, Matt and Sylvia. The Buffalo snowstorm has delayed their arrival until tomorrow evening.

Things we learned:

  • We have to leave earlier to get to Winter Park or Copper Mountain
  • Eldora felt like skiing in Buffalo; like Swain or BSC
  • Bruce is ok, we were worried he wouldn't be. We can handle blind; we can't handle not having him around.
  • A nontraditional couch fits in with our nontraditional life
  • We are busy! Like, busy - busy until we leave in January.
Picture dump at the end!

Much Love and Happy Times,
The Blackshire's

365 Days of Roaming!

Today is the official 365th day of being on the road. It's crazy to think about all we have done in the last 365 days, and even crazier...
